Cat Cafe and new waterfront bar to Alexandria; enjoy a drink near HQ2; NoVa., market stats; & more

It's challenging to keep up with local news, particularly the items that may impact your life, your commute, or your community. That's why each week we compile a few interesting developments happening in the area.

"Developer JBG Smith may be planning to let people sip alcohol as they browse shops and sit outdoors in shopping areas near Amazon’s future headquarters in Pentagon City and Crystal City."

"The revitalized pier at Old Town Alexandria’s newest waterfront development will feature a bar and lounge carved out of shipping containers."

"High prices and a limited number of homes for sale have been the hallmarks of the Washington area’s housing market for years. Even as other markets nationwide have experienced increases in the number of homes for sale and slowing price increases, the capital region remains a seller’s market in many neighborhoods."

"UrbanTurf takes a look at the more than 5,000 units in the residential pipeline in the National Landing area."

"This month marks a decade since Virginia debuted its first state-sponsored Amtrak routes: two lines from Lynchburg and Richmond that both terminate in DC. Such milestones are important, but the Commonwealth has other figures to celebrate—like the fact that its rail ridership has grown more than 7% within the last year."

"Arlington retained its top position statewide in total domestic-tourism spending for 2018, according to new data, slightly widening the narrow advantage it maintains over neighboring Fairfax County."

"A grocery store, a fitness center and a movie theater are on the wish list of anchor tenants for the new development at the former Landmark Mall site."

It will still be several months before it opens, but Alexandria’s own cat café is a step closer to opening. Mount Purrnon has signed a lease in Old Town Alexandria for the City’s first cat café – a place where people can work, eat and drink, plus pet and adopt cats. Mount Purrnon will open at 109 S. Alfred Street. An opening is planned for the spring of 2020.
